Elmo Party

For Lucas's 2nd Birthday we chose the Elmo theme.  All of the kids were pretty young, so I thought it would be fun to make something for them to play in and crawl through.  We decided to make a house out of cardboard.  The kids loved crawling into the house and hiding from the adults.  We connected a tunnel to the doorway of the house so they crawled through that.  One thing we love doing is a family picture.  We try to stick to the theme of the party, so all of us were in a Sesame Street shirt.  We also encourage the guests to dress for the occasion to keep everyone into the theme.  We bought a pinata and filled that up with goodies for the kids.  They loved the pinata!

Pirate Party

For my son's 5th birthday we decided to throw a pirate themed party!  We had pirate themed food, a treasure hunt, and a prop filled photo area.  The kids had so much fun... even the adults had a good time!
Add more pirate figurines to set the scene
Pirate Cake

Here are some ideas for Pirate food:

I carved a watermelon into a shark,

complete with gummy worms hangingout of it's mouth.  We added some gummy octopus and gummy fish.  I used purple grapes for the eyes.  Dress up the scene with pirate figurines (found at Michaels Crafts or JoAnn Fabrics).

For the Oreo cookies, I bought some white chocolate candy melt, and dipped half of the cookie.  Once that dried I took some black frosting and added the eye patch.  For the sugar cookies, I frosted them and decorated them, some had words on them, the number 5, since it was his 5th birthday and some I made pirate faces on.  I used little white pearls on the bandanna so add some texture.  I sprinkled some gold coins all around the food buffet to add to the pirate theme.

Photo shoot props
It's picture time!  I set up a table full of photo props including pirate hats, eye patches, a parrot, jewels, pirate costumes, telescopes, and pirate flags.  I also made some fun things to hold with sayings on them, some mustaches, hats, bandannas or treasure maps.  Those were really inexpensive and added some fun with picture time!  The kids got pretty creative in picking out their props.  I made telescopes out of toilet paper rolls, painted them black and added sparkly gold ribbon.

We played some fun games!  We played pin the eye patch on the pirate, their prize for playing was a treasure chest full of things to help them on their treasure hunt.  We did this instead of a goodie bag, they filled their own goodie bag from the pinata and treasure hunt.  The treasure chest was filled with a map, a compass ring, an empty goodie bag, an eye patch, a necklace, and a few other small treasures.  Once they won their treasure chest it was time for the treasure hunt!  The kids were really excited for that!  They put on their treasure hunt gear and were off to find the hidden treasure.  I found a blow up palm tree at Party City and put the treasure chest next to that.  It was overflowing with treasures and all of the kids had fun picking out their treasures and filling up their goodie bag!

A little fish netting over the table adds
a nice, inexpensive touch.  The pirate skull pinata was a lot of fun!
